Sunday School Events - 2006-07

Carol Service

The Carol Service on Sunday 24th December 2006 went well with all the Sunday School present except two pupils who were unfortunately ill. The Sunday School presented two plays - "The Shepherds on the Hillside" and "The Candy Cane at Christmas". The children sang "The Shepherds Song" and "See Him lying on a bed of straw", along with prayers and readings. At the end of the service the congregation was each given a Candy Cane and a scroll detailing the story of the Candy Cane. The children received a selection box each from Santa and a present from each of their teachers.

Children's Day

Our annual Children's Day Service was held on Sunday 17th June 2007. There was a great turnout of parents and family members, which was encouraging for the children and indeed the Teachers. Rev Hutton had the day off from pulpit duties and these were ably carried out by Megan Hanna, who really enjoyed it.

The theme for the service this year was SOAP and, through readings, prayers, hymns and the children's musical abilities, the meaning of the word SOAP was conveyed to the congregation. SOAP standing for Scriptures, Obey (The Ten Commandments), Attend (Church every week) and Prayer. Hymns sang were "Tell me the Stories of Jesus", "I am the Church" and "O Happy Day" and the Sunday School children sang "If you're saved and you know it, clap your hands" and "It's me, It's me, It's me, O Lord, Standing in the Need of Prayer".

The prizegiving ceremony was carried out by The Superintendent and Sunday School Teachers. All pupils present received certificates for the Sunday School Competitions and Attendance Money. Megan Hanna received 1st prize and The Richardson Cup for her freehand painting in the General Section, Nicole Hempkin received 2nd prize for her composition of an Order of Service for Children's Day, Joseph Hanna received 2nd prize for his model of Solomon's Temple and Katie-Rose Rice received 1st prize for a freehand drawing of the Good Samaritan. Lucy Hanna, Joseph Hanna and Deanna Marks and Melanie Walsh received plaques for being the best class pupils. Robert Little received the Ken McClure Memorial Cup and Presentation Bible for the Best Overall Pupil. This year we had a new award, a Cup for the Best Attendee in Memory of valued church member, Mrs Isobel Wylie, and this award went jointly to Sophie and Nicole Hempkin, who only missed two Sundays each at Sunday School throughout the year.

The first commandment is this: "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." The second is this: "You must love your neighbour as yourself." No other commandment is greater than these.

Mark 12:29-31
