Sunday School Events - 2010-11

Carol Service

Before the Carol Service we continued our tradition of a Christmas Coffee Morning. This was just as successful as last year's and was extremely well attended by the entire congregation and many thanks to those who donated money, this was greatly appreciated.

During the Carol Service the children played out the story of "The Christmas Star" with the younger ones dressing up and the older ones reading the story. The children also sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" (a Christmas version!) and read a poem about the True Meaning of Christmas. Members of the congregation were given a star shaped tealight to represent a star burning in the night sky as a reminder of the night Jesus was born (unfortunately there wasn't enough of these to go round so apologies to anyone who didn't receive one). Many thanks to Santa for taking time out of his busy schedule to present the children with Selection boxes.

Family Service

We held our new-look Family Service (formerly Childrenís Day) on Sunday 19th June 2011. This was well attended by children, parents and church members and we especially welcomed visiting children and their families. The Theme for our service this year was 'Friendship' and this message was conveyed through the Book of Ruth. Our Minister for the day was Sophie, giving the Rev Hutton a much needed rest!

Hymns sang by the entire congregation were 'Stand Up Clap Hands Shout Thank you Lord'; 'Jesus Hands Were Kind Hands'; 'O! O! O! How Good is the Lord'; 'Jesus Friend of Little Children'; 'If I were a Butterfly' and 'Jesus Bids Us Shine'. Lucy read our first reading which was from the Book of Ruth and this was followed with prayers, including the Lordís Prayer, led by Sophie. As this Sunday was also Fathers Day Jake and Alex presented all the Fathers with a special bookmark while Daniel and Joshua played for us on the piano. Gail led a short address for the children about the importance of Friendship.

This was followed by our all important prizegiving. Shields were given to the best pupil in each class and these were received by Daniel, Lucy and Sophie. Sunday School Competition prizes and Certificates were also awarded and in Antheaís class Alex received a first prize for his entry in the general section, Abbey and Daniel received first prize for a display suitable for a Remembrance Day Service. In Gailís class, Olivia, Lucy and Joshua received two first prizes for creating a working game based on Moses and the Exodus and making a model of a chariot in biblical times. For the game, named 'Holy Moses!', they also received the Millennium Cup for the overall most original entry. In Darylís class Sophie received second prize for her entry in the general section and Nicole received a third prize for a freehand drawing of a prophet studied this year. All entries were displayed at the front of the church for everyone to see how well the children had done and how good all their entries were. Attendance money was also received. The Isobel Wylie Cup for Attendance went to Lucy who only missed one Sunday from Sunday School throughout the year. The Kenneth McClure Memorial Cup and Presentation Bible were awarded to Joshua. Well done to everyone!

After this our Offering was received by Alex and Jake, during which Lucy played the recorder followed by Sarah reading the Offertory Prayer. Following this Dylan read our final reading concluding the story of Ruth and Nadine and Nicole read the final prayers. The very enjoyable service closed with the Benediction from Abbey.

Sponsored Walk and Barbecue

We held our annual Sponsored Walk and BBQ in Gosford Forest Park on Saturday 25th June 2011. Despite all the recent bad weather we were once again blessed with lovely warm weather enabling us to complete our 2km walk of the Castle Trail with no coats or umbrellas! The event was very well supported by children and adults (of all ages!) and, after enjoying superbly cooked burgers and hotdogs washed down by tea and juice, the children took part in organised games and races, while the adults sat around and enjoyed the craic! At the time of writing the final amount raised is not known but thanks to everyone who took part, sponsored, donated or helped out. The aim is not only to raise as such money as possible for Sunday School Funds and Southern Area Hospice but to also give the children of the Sunday School a fun and enjoyable day out and I think we can certainly say we achieved that. We would also like to thank the Management of Gosford Forest Park for kindly allowing us the use of the facilities in the park.

The first commandment is this: "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." The second is this: "You must love your neighbour as yourself." No other commandment is greater than these.

Mark 12:29-31

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
